Recycling Acrylic Plastic

Acrylic is used across a wide variety of industries and services. Like most materials that are frequently used, acrylic is often recycled into alternative products after are has served its purpose.

Acrylic is a plastic that mimics the qualities of glass; it is clear, malleable, and used in applications that require higher strengths and resistance to breakage. When recycling acrylic, it is important to research the recycling guideline for a specific community. Not every area is equipped to process acrylic, or specialty items.   Acrylic is a very easily identified plastic, but it is in its own subcategory for recycling. Most facilities do not expect acrylic products, but the ones that do break up the material into two main types: polymethyl acrylate and polymethyl methacrylate.  Polymethyl methacrylate can be recycled by using pyrolysis, which is the process of using molten led to depolymerize the material.

Laser cut acrylic and custom acrylic displays are some of the items that are commonly recycled.  Laser cutting acrylic is the process that designs the majority of the custom acrylic displays that are available on the market.  Once the acrylic is recycled, it is transformed into large sheets and used for a number of different applications.
